Will acupuncture be the new face lift?
In recent studies, anti-aging is proving to be effective in slowing down the aging process. In one particular study acupuncture was shown to “strengthen the protection of cells, inhibit apoptosis and anti-oxidative stress through regulating expression of HSP84 and HSP86, hence anti-aging.” (Jiu., 2006). Studies are confirming that acupuncture will make you look and feel younger. This information is only just now reaching the general public. Although the positive effects of acupuncture have been around for thousands of years, it is only more recently becoming a viable medical resource not only for anti-aging effects, but for many types of disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed over eight different disease or conditions that benefit from acupuncture, and anti-aging, although not a disease, is sought out by many offering a much easier with the least amount of side effect (may have some bruising) compared to other anti-aging options. How the effects of acupuncture work in anti-aging is by a process identified in traditional Chinese medicine as moving qi (Chee) and blood. Qi is a form of energy within the body and both blood and Qi can become stagnated, causing oxidative stress which takes its toll on our skin leaving wrinkles and fine lines. The acupuncture treatments will improve muscle tone and dermal contraction, increasing collagen production that will tighten pores. It can also be used to help to decrease puffiness and inflammation. What is happening is rejuvenation whereby acupuncture uses our own bodies to repair and reconstruct the collagen fibers, and strengthen and rehydrate subcutaneous muscle. This treatment affects the energy balance of the whole body, so it’s a treatment is addressing both the external and internal parts of the body. During each session fine sterile needles are used on particular acupuncture points on the face and neck. It is with the needles that Qi and Blood are able to move boosting circulation while also supporting the lymphatic system to drain away stored toxins from the skin and then promote new collagen. The needles are specifically placed to tighten. Improvements can be seen anywhere from 4-6 weeks.
Let’s face it (excusing the pun), many of us have very busy lives with family, work, school, and social life and adding time constraints in some cases adds more stress in our lives which in the end will show up on our face through oxidative stress, i.e., premature aging. But if there is something we can do for ourselves, then why not take the opportunity to visit your local acupuncturist to see the benefits for yourself while enjoying a most pleasant and relaxing process.
